Planned shutdown — Chemical

How do you prepare a maintenance shutdown in a chemical plant?

Before any mechanical work, equipment is drained, purged and decontaminated, and process lines are isolated: valves locked out and, where needed, blind flanges installed. Tanks and reactors are often confined spaces: the RSST (ss. 297 to 312) then requires the hazards and prevention measures to be determined in writing by a qualified person, with an attendant and a rescue plan.

Which documents should be consulted before the work?

The safety data sheets (WHMIS) for the products present, the lockout procedure for each piece of equipment and the facility's permits: hot work, confined space and work at height.
